The Post-Retirement Disability Benefit (PRDB) is a monthly benefit for Canada Pension Plan Retirement (CPPR) recipients who become disabled after their CPP retirement pension start date.
Who’s eligible?
The PRDB benefit is available for those between 60 and 65 who’ve made sufficient contributions to the CPP, or who’ve received CPP retirement payments for a minimum of 15 months before applying for the CPP Disability Benefit. Eligibility rules for the PRDB are the same as the CPP Disability Benefit. If an applicant is found not eligible for the CPP Disability Benefit because they received the CPP retirement pension for more than 15 months, they will automatically be considered for the PRDB by Service Canada. The PRDB is only available to those receiving an early retirement pension with a Minimum Qualifying Period that extended into January 2019.
Important to know
- The PRDB was introduced on Jan. 1, 2019. No benefits can be approved earlier than that date.
- For 2019, the amount of the PRDB is $496.30 per month (the flat rate component of the CPP Disability Benefit, which is increased with the cost of living adjustment).
- The PRDB is paid in addition to the CPP early retirement pension.
- If approved, the PRDB will be paid until age 65.
How is it different from the CPP Disability Benefit?
If a person becomes disabled after they’ve already started collecting their retirement pension, they’re not eligible to receive the CPP Disability Benefit. However, the same person may be eligible for the PRDB.
